NOMINATION FOR UGANDA WILDLIFE CONSERVATION AWARDS 2017 IS OPEN

 

Introduction

As part of activities to commemorate World Wildlife Day, Government, through Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities, will recognize persons who have made unique and significant contributions to the sustainable conservation and development of wildlife resources in Uganda.

Categories of Awards

The awards will be in the following categories:

1.Sustainable Protected Area Management Award: Given to persons who have demonstrated excellence in sustainable conservation in national parks, wildlife reserves, community wildlife areas and sanctuaries.

2.Wildlife Havens Award: Given to persons whose activities have given lifeline to wildlife outside protected

3.Species Recovery Award: Given for distinguished efforts to save and aid recovery of populations of rare, threatened, endemic, or endangered species. Advancing species recoveryrare, threatened, endemic, endangered or extinct species

4.Sustainable Eco-tourism Award: Given to organizations that have applied best practices in sustainable eco-tourism management and that demonstrate exceptional commitment to protection of wildlife and natural environment.

5.Human-Wildlife Co-existence Award: Given for excellence in advancing and innovating human-wildlife conflict mitigation tools and measures helping to ensure harmonious co-existence between wildlife and humans.

6.Wildlife Research Award: Given for individual record of sustained applied research. The award focuses on research that informed or has potential to improve wildlife management, conservation best practices and tools and policy making.

7.Wildlife Conservation Education Award: Given for exceptional audio-visual and media works and programmes representing a sustained effort that influences positive public appreciation and stewardship for wildlife.

8.Counter Poaching and Trafficking Award: Given for exceptional excellence and acts of bravery in preventing, disrupting, controlling and dismantling poaching, illegal wildlife trade and trafficking in wildlife and wildlife products.

9.Protected Area Peace, Justice and Equity Award: Given for distinguished efforts in advancing the rights of the   indigenous groups, vulnerable persons, promotion of indigenous knowledge and advancing mutual respect among communities and protected area management. 

10.Community Livelihood Awards: Given to organizations that implement pro-poor wildlife based or alternative income enterprises helping to alleviate economic and social burdens imposed on communities living in proximity to protected areas.

11.Young Wildlife Conservationist Award: Given to young persons between 18 and 30 years of age to recognize and honour their efforts, passion, dedication and commitment to protected areas and wildlife conservation.

 

Types of Awards 

Individual awards shall fall in categories 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 11 while organizational awards are restricted to category 4, 8, 9, and 10.

Nomination procedure and selection criteria

  1. The conservation awards shall be given to those who have made unique contributions to wildlife conservation in Uganda.
  2. Nominations, in English, shall be accepted for both individuals and institutions using prescribed formation.
  3. Self-nominations shall not be accepted.
  4. Nomination of current members of the Evaluation Committee shall not be accepted.
  5. Nomination shall be supported by recommendation from two referees who should write independently to the secretariat.
  6. Invitations for nominations shall be placed through local and national media. In addition, official requests for nominations will be sent to conservation authorities in Uganda.
  7. A competent Evaluation Committee shall evaluate the nominations and select the final winners. The decision of the committee shall be final.
  8. The winners shall be notified and invited to receive their awards by 28th February 2017
